Caño Negro Wildlife Refuge

Embark on a Caño Negro guided riverboat trip in a panga (covered canoe) and see one of the largest viewable collections of indigenous wildlife in all of Costa Rica. Be sure to bring your camera!
Arenal Volcano
Standing amongst the billowy clouds in this region of Costa Rica, you’ll see this majestic natural landmark standing high above the land. The volcano was at its most active from 1968 to 2008 and despite its mighty abilities, it has been in a resting phase with little activity since 2010. You will gain newfound respect for Mother Earth’s power when you look upon this site of fire and brimstone.
La Fortuna Waterfall
Tucked into the rainforests of La Fortuna, you’ll find this picturesque natural attraction. Head to the top of the waterfall and admire the showering crystalline waters from a lookout platform. If you’re feeling adventurous, take a dip in the cool, emerald-colored pools at the waterfall’s base.
Peñas Blancas River
Take in a tranquil day on a safari boat ride along the Peñas Blancas River. A local guide will point out exotic wildlife that you just might spot on your journey, like sloths, river turtles, and crocodiles. Be sure to bring a raincoat and wear your sunscreen!

Sloths

Roseate Spoonbills
The striking pink plumage and spoon-shaped bill of this bird continues to intrigue nature enthusiasts flocking to Costa Rica. The Roseate Spoonbill can be seen wading through the Frío River searching for small fish to eat. If you journey through the Caño Negro Wildlife Refuge, you might encounter this bird.
Red-Eyed Tree Frogs
With its signature neon-green body and vibrant, crimson eyes, this frog can be found jumping from tree to tree in the Arenal area of Costa Rica. In addition to their striking appearance, these amphibians have the impressive ability to cling to almost any surface thanks to adhesive pads on their fingers and toes. If you are in the Arenal Volcano National Park, you might see these tiny creatures.
