Calgary offers plenty of attractions that are a delight for our guests. From the revered grounds of the Olympic Games, to the exciting rodeo and nearby ranches, there’s a wide array of sporting fun to be had. If you’re more interested in Canadian history or culture, there are plenty of fascinating sites as well. Here are a few of our selected highlights to check out during your time in Calgary.
Canada Olympic Park
Whether you wish to ride the slopes or just revel in all the snowy glory of Canadian sporting events, Olympic Park is worth checking out. If you’re visiting in winter, consider hitting the trails and enjoying a day of skiing, or try other snowy pastimes like the luge and bobsled. For something a bit more low-key, visit the Olympic Hall of Fame and Museum where you can get a glimpse of the largest collection of Olympic artifacts from the competition’s history.
Devonian Gardens
Witness one of the largest indoor gardens in the world and take a scenic stroll through the Devonian Gardens. Covering a full city block in downtown Calgary, this botanical garden contains a living wall, gorgeous fountains, and a stunning array of trees. This site is a great retreat from the bustle of Calgary.
Heritage Park Historical Village
Step back in time and see how Western Canadians came to settle what we know today as modern Alberta. Have a true sensory experience as you climb aboard a historic steamship, enter a fort designed for fur trading, or tour the village of a railway town.
Parks and Natural Spaces
While downtown Calgary boasts imposing skyscrapers and modern city squares, there are still several pockets of quiet, green space. Explore the prairielands and verdant spaces found here and escape the hum of city life for a day. Here are few of our favourite scenic spots.
Prince’s Island Park
Set on a quaint island in the Bow River, Prince’s Island Park is a perfect place to take a leisurely stroll and admire the city from afar. Rent a bike or just stretch out on the grass as you enjoy a day outdoors. Some of our guests have been lucky enough to see Shakespeare in the Park performed here.
Ralph Klein Park
Take in impressive Rocky Mountain views and discover Canada’s largest man-made wetland at this picturesque park. Stop by the Environmental Education Center and learn of the wildlife found in Calgary and in this particular wetland. This is a great natural site that we believe is worth a visit.
Inglewood Bird Sanctuary
Visit the Inglewood Bird Sanctuary to see a vast array of bird species that flock and nest there. In addition to hundreds of winged creatures, the sanctuary is rich with plant and mammal life that’s been well protected for over 80 years. For bird watchers, this site is a hidden gem.
Reader Rock Garden
Take a walk through this historic, botanical wonder and discover rocky pathways, beautiful flowers, and undisturbed wildlife in a tranquil setting. The park serves as tribute to William Roland Reader, the Superintendent for Calgary Parks responsible for transforming the bare hillside into the stunning garden known and loved by many today.
Museums
Calgary offers visitors a wide range of museums to explore. From several contemporary art galleries to interest-specific highlights like the National Music Centre and Gasoline Alley Museum, the city is filled with places where visitors can connect with local culture. Here are a few of our picks to check out while in the Montreal area.
National Music Center
For music lovers or those looking to learn about Canada’s musical roots, head to this interactive museum. Explore five floors of exhibitions all related to the history of music in Canada. Test your skills on the electric drums or guitar and head to the recording room to put down a track. After you’ve finished creating a melodic masterpiece, relax at the museum’s café.
Glenbow Museum
See the eclectic and ever-changing collection found at Calgary’s Glenbow Museum. The museum offers a wide range of exhibitions on modern art and pop culture, to sections devoted to the history and culture of western Canada. To understand the essence of Alberta’s culture, you’ll want to head to this museum.
Gasoline Alley Museum
Vintage automobile enthusiasts will be enthralled by this museum located in Calgary’s historic Heritage Park. Step back in time as you see one of the world’s largest collections of pristine antique vehicles dating back to the 1930s. Even if you aren’t a car buff, the myriad of vehicles found here is interesting and quite impressive.
The Military Museums
Spend a day exploring this expansive, popular museum and learn more about Canada’s armed forces. Get up close to fighter planes, armoured vehicles, and war gear that’s shaped Canada’s military history. This is a fascinating museum; just remember to allow for extra time as this museum is quite large.
