Why visit Kruger National Park
Natural Sites
Situated at the northeastern tip of South Africa, Kruger National Park and its surrounding ecological wonders are a sight to behold. From the drive to the park along the Panorama Route, to the vast open savannahs found within its grounds, spectacular landscapes are everywhere you look. Here are some natural sites you may see during your visit to Kruger National Park.
Blyde River Canyon
Known as one of Africa's greatest natural wonders, Blyde River Canyon is an awe-inspiring natural site. From atop the sheer cliffs, you’ll see seemingly endless panorama views of lush greenery. This geological landmark can be seen from several viewpoints, including the aptly named “God’s Window.”
Three Rondavels
Within the Blyde River Canyon region you’ll find this trio of domed peaks. Also called the Three Sisters, the Three Rondavels are named after their resemblance to traditional round huts inhabited by South Africa’s indigenous people. These towering rock formations are sure to amaze.
Bourke’s Luck Potholes
The Bourke’s Luck Potholes are a fascinating natural network of tunnels, tubes, and whirling pools. The sandstone and bedrock cylinders have been shaped by millions of years of natural erosion caused by fast-flowing sand-filled waters. While visiting Blyde River Canyon, we suggest heading to a viewing platform to see this intriguing geological feature.
Mac Mac Falls
With twin streams that plunge 70 meters into a gorge below, the Mac Mac Falls are regarded as the most stunning waterfall found along the Panorama Route. This national treasure was said to have been split in two after gold miners blasted the stream to reach a gold-bearing reef under the waters. If you’re up for a swim or a picnic, there are several pools where you can enjoy the Mac Mac’s waters.
Activities
While days on safari will keep you delightfully occupied, Kruger National Park offers other forms of entertainment, too. The activities here are engaging and offer travellers a unique means to connect with nature. Fully immerse yourself in the pleasures found at this large game reserve.
Boma Dinner
The history of the boma dates back to pre-colonial Africa when groups would use wooden fences to protect their livestock and homesteads. After a day on safari, these structures enclose outdoor dining areas that create an inviting place to have a meal under the stars. This special meal features a delicious barbeque meat buffet along with the beat of African drums, a burning fire, and the twinkling sky above. Savor traditional African fare, all the while admiring the ambiance of South Africa’s unique culture.
Bird Watching
While many visitors to Kruger National Park yearn to see the “Big 5,” there’s also an impressive collection of over 500 species of birds here. From the vibrant purple-crested turaco to the scavenging lappet-faced vulture, you’ll be amazed by the sheer variety of birds found living on the reserve. You’ll undoubtedly see at least a few winged animals during your stay at this reserve.
Photography
The grounds at Kruger National Park offer picture-perfect scenery around every turn. Whether you consider yourself an amateur photographer or simply use your phone’s camera, you’ll find that the park offers plenty of beautiful and intriguing subjects to photograph. Just remember - it’s best to keep a safe distance when trying to take a picture of the wildlife.
Open-Air Safari Game Drive
Rise early and make your way across beautiful African landscapes as you search for wildlife on a thrilling open-air safari game drive. A local expert will lead you in search of the "Big 5" – elephant, buffalo, lion, leopard and rhino – and provide insight into these fascinating animals along the way. Watch carefully – you might also see a graceful impala, striking zebra, or lanky giraffe.
Animals
Kruger National Park is home to 147 mammals, 507 bird species, and 114 reptiles. The biggest draw for visitors, however is its impressive collection of “Big 5” game – lion, leopard, rhinoceros, elephant, and African buffalo. Learn more about these prized creatures and know what to look for as you set out on safari here.
Lion
One of the most formidable yet beautiful creatures found in Kruger National Park is the lion. Though their yellowish-brown coats can blend in with the grass, spotting a pride or just a single lion is a true highlight of a game drive. If you have access to binoculars and a camera – we recommend you bring them!
Cape Buffalo
Another quintessential creature you’ll find amongst the South African savannah is the Cape Buffalo. While it might appear docile as it grazes the grass, these buffalo are powerful and dangerous when provoked. Marvel at the buffalo’s curved horns and brute strength from afar if you see one while on safari.
Leopard
These elusive cats are a rare but magnificent sight to see while on safari. Known for their striking spotted fur and ability to reach speeds close to 40 miles per hour, the leopard is most likely to be seen at dusk or dawn. We hope you’re lucky enough to see one of these stealthy felines while on safari.
Black Rhino
These massive animals are one of the most endangered inhabitants of South Africa. With their taupe-colored hides and protruding horns, they have a look reminiscent of a much more prehistoric creature. See if you can catch sight of a rare black rhino on a game drive.
Elephant
The largest and smartest animal in the South African bush, the elephant is an exciting sight to see during a big game drive. As elephants frequently travel in herds, you might catch a glimpse of a family or two going about their day. Being able to see these gargantuan mammals is an experience you won’t forget.
