3 of Europe’s Hidden Gems to Visit

Naxos, Greece

When you think of bucket list-worthy Greek islands, places like Santorini and Mykonos might come to mind. While these popular destinations are undeniably magical, they represent only a small fraction of Greece’s 200-plus inhabited islands—among which lies the gem of Naxos, Greece.

This prosperous, self-sustaining island is the largest of the Cyclades, complete with long beaches, mountain villages, cultural and historic sites, and a lovely capital town situated by the sea. Yet, it remains less frequented by tourists, offering a more authentic taste of Greek island living and culture.

Glimpse ancient history at the Portara, a giant marble gate to the unfinished Temple of Apollo. In the peaceful village of Halki, the former capital of the island nestled in the hills, look for Byzantine churches and Venetian towers. Be sure to try Kitron, a liqueur made exclusively on Naxos, and consider staying in the capital of Chora (also known as Naxos Town), where an Old Town makes for a lovely stroll and the beach is a walk away.

Alentejo, Portugal

In Portugal’s Alentejo region, you can savor a slower pace of life amidst rural landscapes. Cork oaks and olive trees dot the rolling countryside, while the occasional castle and stone monument bring the past to the present. Low, whitewashed houses stand upon small knolls, walled villages speak to medieval times, and an old equestrian culture lives strong. Accompanying it all are the olives, meats, cheeses, local breads, and other foods that are part of the regional cuisine.

When you aren’t basking in the atmosphere, there are plenty of highlights to experience. Witness Roman ruins in the city of Evora. Admire dramatic landscape views from the hilly village of Marvão, with its old walls and wrought-iron balconies. Delve into the area’s equestrian heritage at the historic Alter Stud Farm, founded in 1748, or visit an olive press or vineyard to taste the local flavors.

Salina, Sicily

Located north of Sicily, Salina is another dreamy island that might not be on your radar. But here’s why it should be: surrounded by vibrant blue waters and dark volcanic rock, this far-flung isle enchants with its dramatic beauty, excellent cuisine, and quaint atmosphere.

As part of a volcanic archipelago, Salina is comprised of two extinct volcanoes — which sets the foundation for all that natural beauty. Black sand beaches form a striking contrast with blue waters, volcanic peaks and cliffs create a sense of rugged majesty, and fertile soil nurtures an abundance of lush vegetation.

That soil also nurtures the vineyards and caper production Salina is famous for. Malvasia, a sweet dessert wine, and flavorful capers are local treasures that every visitor should try. You might pair them with a meal of fresh seafood after a day spent soaking in the sun and strolling through charming villages.
