Vacations are supposed to be fun.
But not everything that goes into the process of travel is enjoyable or easy. Many of us have to take time off from work, and/or are beholden to school vacation calendars. Somewhere around 40% of American households today own a dog, and that means there are roughly 65 million people who have to arrange pet care if they take trips without the pups, and in many areas, getting a quality reservation at a good boarding facility can be harder than getting your own hotel room. Flights have to be booked, and there are more classes of non-refundable tickets today than in the past— if things go wrong, most travelers can at best hope to use some of the money they spent towards future travel.
Having your vacation plans cancelled is annoying, disappointing and often costly, a waste of both time and money. You can hedge your bets by buying trip insurance, but when you actually need it, you might be surprised to find out how many reasons for cancellation are excluded from coverage. Just this year, I’ve had trips cancelled due to war and natural disasters, and those kinds of things are very hard to predict or prevent.
