Collette’s CEO, Jaclyn Leibl-Cote, is no stranger to travel. She’s been exploring the world since she was a child, and she’s figured a few things out along the way.
“I love Travelling, but when you leave home, you need to have the perfect mix of having what you need and not packing way too much. I have my list of essentials that make me comfortable, happy, and prepared when I’m on the go.” – Jaclyn Leibl-Cote
JACLYN’S NEXT TRIP: “Ringing in 2025 in Tanzania with my husband and three children.”
When it comes to packing for any trip, Jaclyn has her go-to items that make travel smoother, more stylish, and comfortable. Between global conferences, speaking engagements, and following her passion by exploring the world, here are her top must-have items:
Long flights can really dry out your skin, so I like to always carry a facial mist with me. It’s how I stay hydrated and rejuvenated on the go, especially when Travelling to hot or dry climates. Plus, airplanes are so dry, it is truly refreshing to have a mist at the ready. A light mist also helps to keep your skin glowing, which is a bonus! With this carry-on, you just have to be up-to-date on TSA regulations; any liquids in your carry-on luggage must each be in containers of 100 ml or less. I put my facial mist in a small, clear container. If you want to bring a larger bottle of facial mist, you can pack it in your checked luggage.
A comfortable neck pillow is a lifesaver during long flights or car rides. I’ve had luck with many brands over the years, but recommend shopping before your trip and not at the airport for these. You’ll find them at the airport… at about twice the price. Look for an ergonomic design that supports your neck without adding too much bulk to your carry-on. No matter which seat or section of the aeroplane you are in, a good neck pillow makes a world of difference in how rested you feel when you get to your destination.
A pair of comfortable, black pants that can transition from day to night is a must-have for travel. I stress the word “comfortable” because these pants can be dressed up or casual – but travel can keep you on the go, and added comfort is key to a positive experience. Bring layers like a cardigan or light jacket – and always bring a scarf. A scarf can not only add style to your outfit but double as a blanket during a chilly flight or serve as a makeshift pillow. The versatility of a good scarf makes it an indispensable travel companion. I won’t lie – I probably bring about three or four scarves and pashminas with me on my trips – they are pops of colour, a layer of style, and added comfort in the easiest possible form.
Staying hydrated is crucial whilst Travelling, especially on long flights or when exploring new cities. One of the most convenient (and sustainable) ways to plan for appropriate hydration is to carry a reusable water bottle. You’ll avoid buying plastic and always have a water vessel handy for any opportunities to refill. Many airports now have water stations where you can refill your bottle. This is an eco-friendly choice as well, but also allows you to bring your favourite water bottle from home on the go. Depending on the weight or size of your carry-on, you might choose a bottle that is collapsable and light-weight, or if you have the room, a stainless steel bottle to hold the temperature you prefer.
Travelling often means a lot of walking, whether you’re wandering through airports or exploring new destinations. I always have with me a pair of sneakers (or two) that are stylish and comfortable enough to carry you through a full day of sightseeing. A good pair of sneakers can make all the difference between an enjoyable trip and one filled with sore feet. Pro tip: break in your shoes before you travel. You can’t pack everything, and you might be stuck with just what you packed, so a new destination is not the place to try out your shoes for the first time.
A stylish and functional backpack is essential for keeping everything organized and within easy reach. I always opt for a backpack with multiple compartments – like a spot for my laptop and iPad, and another space for my paperback book, essentials like my phone, wallet, and travel documents. A backpack also frees up your hands, making it easier to navigate busy streets or catch a last-minute flight without fumbling for your belongings. I absolutely love the Land’s End Collette bag, because it’s great quality, and has all of the compartments that I want. It’s not too big, but it has enough room for everything that I need.
I mentioned storing my paperback book in my backpack because I never go on a trip without bringing a book to read. Flights are the best time to catch up on reading. You’re unplugged with time on your hands, and if you’re too busy to read at home, reading on the go is a great way to have that wonderful escape into fictional worlds. For those who love their Kindle and e-readers, plan for low-battery or technical situations and have that paperback back-up. If you love reading, you’ll appreciate the OG reader (physical book copy) if your digital book fails you.
A compact travel umbrella is a must-have for any traveller, ensuring you’re prepared for unexpected weather without taking up too much space in your bag. I always carry a lightweight, foldable umbrella that can easily fit into my backpack. This way, when I’m navigating through a rainy city or shielding myself from the sun, I’m always covered—literally! Look for one that’s wind-resistant and quick to dry, so it’s reliable and convenient no matter where your travels take you.
Aeroplane cabins can get cold, and nothing is better than slipping into a pair of cosy socks to keep your feet warm and comfortable during long flights. I recommend bringing a pair that’s both thick and soft, ensuring your feet feel pampered even when you’re far from home. It’s a simple luxury that makes a big difference when you're Travelling for hours. I prefer the soft, fleece socks for my travels. They’re comfortable and loose so the elastic doesn’t dig into my skin. Plus, they’re as soft as a blanket – a must-have if you are cold on the plane or in your hotel room.
In today’s digital age, staying connected is essential, especially when you’re Travelling. A portable charger ensures that my devices are always powered, so whether I’m using my phone for navigation, taking photos, or keeping in touch with my family and friends, I’m good to go. I never leave home without one. It’s a small investment that provides peace of mind – and a must-have today.
Travelling can be unpredictable. Have you ever been stuck in an airport before the stores and coffee shops open, or after they’ve closed? I have. Flights can get delayed, or you may find that good food options aren’t available to you. I am always ready for any situation and pack a few healthy snacks, like protein bars or almonds, to keep hunger at bay and my energy levels up. This small preparation step can save you from a grumbling stomach and often expensive airport food.
Long flights and different climates can take a toll on your skin. I always carry a travel-sized skincare kit, complete with moisturizer, lip balm, and cleansing wipes. Keeping your skin clean and hydrated during travel helps you feel refreshed and ready to tackle whatever comes next.
Whether it’s drowning out the noise of a bustling airport, or tuning out distractions on a flight, noise-canceling headphones are a must for me. They make it easier to enjoy a podcast, catch up on a show, or just relax in peace with some favourite songs. Investing in a good pair can turn even the noisiest environments into a sanctuary. I have both a pair of noise cancelling earbuds, but also over the ear pairs – both with Bluetooth capability to connect to my phone. But I bring a cord adapter as well in case I need to directly connect my headphones to my device (or to the seat, if I want to enjoy the movies offered by the airline with my own headphone set).
I hope you’ve enjoyed this list of Jaclyn’s favourite things! She is on-the-go and always adding things to her list of must-haves. So many of the items on this list can take you all over the world again and again – that alone is worth it because, after all, comfort on the road is the most important travel essential.
