Trains, highways, and short flights make it easy to cross borders, and the continent offers an abundance of diverse countries, regions, cultures, and experiences. Beach resorts, storied histories, beautiful architecture, esteemed museums, wild mountains, fantastic food—the opportunities are seemingly endless.

With so many possible picks, finding the best solo travel destinations in Europe often comes down to personal opinion. Priorities and interests vary, lesser-known spots can be hidden treasures, and conditions can change. Different people can also have different experiences.
That said, these five destinations can be a great starting point when thinking of the best European cities and countries for solo travel.
Destination 1: Solo Travel in Lisbon, Portugal
Lisbon, the capital of Portugal, is a coastal destination brimming with history and culture. The Mediterranean climate is pleasant, and the city is rather walkable, though on the hilly side. Whilst some of the city has been modernized, its heritage is preserved in historic neighborhoods, buildings, museums, and other sights.
Stroll along the waterfront to admire the centuries-old Belém Tower and the majestic Monument to the Discoveries. Weave through the charming old Alfama neighbourhood, with its little alleyways and cobbled streets. Tour the Castelo de São Jorge, and walk to the beautiful grand square of Praça do Comércio. There are plenty of cafes and eateries around to stop in during the day, and solo travellers can find themselves surrounded by joyful company at Fado restaurants, which honour Portuguese traditions with a special dinner and performance.

Destination 2: Solo Travel in Reykjavík, Iceland
With a reputation for safety and awe-inspiring landscapes, some name Iceland as one of the best places to travel solo in Europe—especially for adventurers. Reykjavík, the country’s capital, offers museums, restaurants, shopping, sightseeing, and a lively nightlife. The Hallgrímskirkja church was a particularly memorable sight for me, with its soaring, unique tower and ornate architecture. Many people speak English, the city’s centre is foot-traffic-friendly, and the long summer daylight hours add a level of comfort to dinnertime walks. If you plan to go in the winter, though, keep in mind that daylight hours are short!
Reykjavík is also a great jumping-off point for adventurers. With its otherworldly landmarks, monstrous glaciers, thundering waterfalls, luxurious hot springs, and terrific hiking trails, Iceland boasts extraordinary outdoor experiences and views not too far from the city. You can even try chasing the northern lights on a cruise (a special experience included in our Iceland’s Magical Northern Lights tour). Solo travellers can book guided tours that begin and end in Reykjavík or rent a car to do some exploring. Some spots, like glaciers, have companies that offer short tours or experiences for that specific area. It’s a great way to meet like-minded travellers!
P.S. If you do decide to drive yourself around Iceland, pay attention to the speed limit; Iceland uses speed check cameras, even on roads that feel like they’re in the middle of nowhere.
Destination 3: Solo Travel in Amsterdam, Netherlands
Back when I was in school, it seemed like everyone who embarked on a study abroad semester went to Amsterdam. And it’s no wonder why. This city is charming and easily accessed by train, and it’s a comfortable place to travel on foot.
But walking isn’t the only way to get around here. When you hear “Amsterdam,” images of bicycle-lined bridges or calm canals might come to mind. Cyclists are welcome here, and the city’s historic web of canals offers a lovely way to experience this destination. Choose from various canal cruises, and admire the tilted waterfront buildings and neighborhoods from the water in a quintessential Amsterdam experience—one that’s part of our Netherlands, Belgium, & France tour.
Amsterdam also has multiple museums, which are perfect for the solo traveller who enjoys history and art. Anne Frank House, the Van Gogh Museum, and the Rijksmuseum are just a few. When you aren’t strolling the streets or cruising through canals, great shopping and restaurants are available.
Destination 4: Solo Travel in London, England
There’s a reason our Spotlight on London tour spends about a week in this location. Someone might describe London as a world within a city. This bustling metropolis is a modern financial, cultural, and political hub, whilst also being a place where history is preserved. For English speakers who enjoy the arts, culture, history, and buzzing big cities but are nervous about language barriers, London might be one of the best solo travel destinations in Europe.
Fans of history and architecture can admire the ornate façades of iconic landmarks, like Westminster Abbey, Tower Bridge, and Elizabeth Tower and Big Ben. Travellers can stand before the stately Buckingham Palace and witness the famous King’s Guard in their red and black uniforms. Museum lovers have plenty of options to choose from, literature buffs can catch a show at Shakespeare’s Globe, and foodies can try classic English foods and international eats.
However, if you decide to rent a car to venture from the city, make sure you’re comfortable with driving solo on the left side of the road.
Destination 5: Solo Travel in San Sebastián, Spain
Two recent day trips to San Sebastián put this smaller city on my might-solo-travel-there list. Tucked away in northern Spain, just minutes from France, this coastal city has my personal trifecta: beaches, hikes, and sights…and excellent food, historic sections, modern neighborhoods, close proximity to France—okay, so we’re talking more than a trifecta.
In San Sebastián, you can go for a morning hike on the outskirts of the city, sip on a delicious coffee, and relax on the beach before shopping at an upscale boutique and dining at a Michelin-starred restaurant. The city’s Old Town offers perfectly walkable streets brimming with historic architecture, shops, and eateries for pintxo bar hopping (pintxos being small snacks similar to tapas). Downtown streets felt safe during the daytime, and I noticed a police presence, which added a layer of security. Bonus for solo travelers: the city is part of a popular pilgrimage route, which means there’s a chance to meet other solo adventurers.

Whilst many parts of Europe are generally considered safe for travel, safety levels can vary by location, and it isn’t guaranteed. Solo travellers and female travellers (and really any travellers) should take sensible precautions and minimise risks.
