From wines to cheeses to perfumes, products imported from France tend to carry a special aura.
Maybe it’s the reputation of French craftsmanship and gastronomy, the refinement and romanticism associated with Paris, or the thought of having something from picture-perfect countrysides and coastlines. Whatever it is, there’s something about certain French goods that feels…luxurious.
And while you can acquire almost anything online these days, there’s something extra valuable about a product that was bought in that very destination. Because then it’s no longer just an object, but also a story, an experience, and an authentic connection to France.
In short, when visiting France, a souvenir from your travels can be a memorable and cherished gift for loved ones or for yourself. We chatted with Collette Partnership Marketing Manager Kateryna Havrylova—who lived there and also speaks fluent French—about some of the best souvenirs to look for.
It should be no surprise that wine is on this list. After all, it’s France—a destination that goes hand-in-hand with the term “fine wine.” But as you’ll read below, each region has its own standouts, and le vin isn’t the only beverage our expert recommends gifting.
While our liquor stores may carry wine from France, a bottle straight from a French vineyard itself is uniquely special. What’s even more special? Bringing home a regional standout based on where you travel. Think: champagne from the Champagne region, sauvignon blanc from the Loire Valley, or rosé from Provence. It’s a gift for connoisseurs and casual wine lovers alike.
If you know someone who prefers a hot, warming mug instead, consider grabbing a high-end tea. Kateryna specifically mentioned tea from Mariage Frères, a gourmet tea company based in the French capital. Should you find yourself in Paris, you can head to one of their city stores for a taste.
From perfected pastries and crusty baguettes to savory stews and a range of cheeses, food is undoubtedly part of France’s allure. Having spent time there myself, I can easily attest to the drool-worthiness of it all. As much as you might wish to bring home that excellent escargot you had, these suggestions are a bit more travel-friendly.
France is renowned for its excellent cheeses, making them a delicious souvenir for yourself or the foodie in your life. (I’m convinced I’ll never find a Comté as good as the one I had from a farmer’s market in Biarritz!) That said, there are some restrictions on which cheeses you can bring into the U.S., so do a quick internet check before purchasing. Cheese accessories, like cheese plates, are also a great option.
These golden French butter cookies are a delightful sweet treat or accompaniment for tea or coffee. Kateryna suggests grabbing a box if you’re in Saint-Malo, a city within the Brittany region that’s included on our France Magnifique tour.
Macarons are delicate, sugary, and airy delights to eat. Not to be confused with macaroons, which are drop cookies with flaked coconut, macarons (with one “o”) are little merengue-based cookie sandwiches often filled with buttercream or other tasty options. Kateryna named Ladurée as a brand to look for.
Of course, France isn’t all wine, tea, and delicious foods. There are plenty of other memorable souvenirs to gift to others (or yourself). For anyone who appreciates a fragrant eau de toilette, special self-care, or beautiful art, these souvenirs could be the perfect surprise.
Nestled in the French Riviera, the town of Grasse is considered to be the perfume capital of the world. So, where better to purchase a fragrance? While pre-made perfumes are easily found there—and all over France—participating in a perfume-making experience can result in a super personalized, one-of-a-kind souvenir. (It’s an experience that’s included in our Essence of France tour!)
Artisanal soaps are another recommendation. More specifically, look for soap from Marseille, which has been making its traditional, world-renowned hard soap for around six centuries (it’s safe to say they have the recipe down). Authentic Marseille soap contains just a few natural ingredients and is free from any synthetic additives. Talk about squeaky clean!
Considering France houses the Louvre, it’s a great place to acquire something for any art admirers in your life. If you’re in Paris, you might head to Montmartre and ask for a portrait painted from a photo of your loved one. Or, go to Place de Tertre, a spot once frequented by the likes of Picasso and Renoir. Located within Montmartre, it’s a popular area for amateur artists who sell their creations.
While these souvenir ideas are a great place to start, there are various treasures to be found throughout France. A farmer’s market, small boutique, or museum could very well contain that perfect gift that someone will cherish forever. So, as you traipse around France, remember to keep your eyes peeled!
And, if you’re on a guided tour with Collette, know that you can always ask your experienced Tour Manager for souvenir recommendations wherever you are.
