I arrived in Peru late in the evening, and as I traveled the unfamiliar roads in the dark, all I could do was imagine the adventures that lay ahead. Peru was cloaked in mystery — quiet, still, and full of promise. I couldn’t wait for daylight and the journey of a lifetime to begin.

Bethany Peru Lima

Our first full day began with a city tour of Lima, and I was immediately captivated by its lively energy. Along the Pacific shoreline, surfers danced with the waves while families filled the lush parks of Miraflores. Couples swayed to the rhythms of Andean music, and just around the corner, locals gathered for friendly games of chess. As the city came alive, so did my excitement. Peru had many stories to tell — and I was ready to listen.

From Lima, we traveled into the Sacred Valley. One of our first stops was an alpaca farm, and it was love at first sight. Feeding these gentle, wide-eyed creatures felt like a dream. Their long lashes and curious nature stole my heart, and I caught myself wondering if my dog back home might like a new friend. At Pisac, a charming artisan village, I immersed myself in learning about silver and authentic baby alpaca textiles. Let’s just say my suitcase left heavier, overflowing with beautiful souvenirs, cozy sweaters, and handmade jewelry.

Our hotel in Sacred Valley was the perfect retreat for adjusting to the altitude. Coca tea became our constant companion, helping us acclimate and stay energized. One morning, as I walked the hotel grounds, I had the incredible chance to feed a baby alpaca with a bottle — it was pure joy and a moment I’ll never forget.

Later that day, I found myself standing at the base of the Ollantaytambo ruins. As a golfer, not a hiker, the thought of scaling those ancient steps at 10,000 feet was intimidating. But I did it, and I felt so proud. Peru was expanding not only my horizons, but also my confidence. I’ll never again say, “I can’t,” because now I know I can.

That afternoon, we visited the small village of Misminay. The simplicity and spirit of this community touched me deeply. It was one of those experiences that shift your entire perspective, reminding you of what truly matters.

And then came the day I had been waiting for: Machu Picchu. For months, I had imagined this moment. I had packed carefully — good shoes, layers, and of course, a sun hat. The train ride to Aguas Calientes offered stunning views of the Andes and roaring rivers. When we reached the top, I was speechless. No photo can prepare you for the magnitude of Machu Picchu. It was far grander and more moving than I had ever imagined. With our guide leading the way, I soaked in the history, the majesty, and the wonder of this iconic site.

Bethany Peru Amazon

After exploring Cusco and the Sacred Valley, our journey continued to Puno and Lake Titicaca. At over 14,000 feet, I definitely could feel the altitude change, but with coca tea and some rest, I embraced the experience. A morning boat ride took us to the floating islands of the Uros people. Even under a misty sky, their joy and hospitality shined brightly. As the children sang for us, I didn’t need to understand the words to feel the warmth in their smiles.

While in Puno, we also visited Sillustani, an awe-inspiring pre-Incan burial site surrounded by tranquil waters and rolling hills. As someone fascinated by anthropology, standing among those ancient chullpas was a surreal, full-circle moment. To witness firsthand what I had once only studied in books… there’s no greater thrill for a curious soul.

Just when I thought the trip couldn’t get any better, I embarked on a two-night extension into the Amazon. I had prepared for heat and bugs, but nothing could’ve prepared me for the sheer wonder of the rainforest. We arrived at our jungle lodge by flat-bottom canoe, and from that moment, I was hooked. The heat was intense, yes —but it made every cool breeze and shaded spot feel like heaven. We explored Lake Sandoval and saw everything from otters and capybaras to caimans and piranhas. And yes, I skipped the hanging bridges in favor of a jungle massage and facial with no regrets!

That peaceful massage in the heart of the Amazon gave me a moment to reflect on all I had seen and experienced. Peru had offered me so much: moments of stillness, bursts of excitement, new friendships, and deep personal growth. Traveling solo among a group of like-minded adventurers reminded me that we’re all part of something much bigger, and that connection is the greatest gift of all.

As someone who loves photography, I left Peru with nearly 1,500 pictures — each one a memory, a story, a feeling captured in time. One day, I hope my grandchildren will flip through “Jamma’s” albums and be inspired to see it all for themselves.

Thanks for reading along about this unforgettable journey. Peru changed me, and I know it will change you too.
